Dear Mr. Lewis:
I understand that the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is supporting the relocation of U.S. 74 as a four-lane highway from Andrews through Stecoah , NC , commonly referred to as "Corridor K." It would be a four-lane road that would cut through steep and scenic mountains. The next ten miles of this road to be built would establish a new route across the Stecoah Valley and Cheoah Mountain and is on a fast track to complete.
I am a frequent visitor to the area in question, especially for hiking and backpacking. I strongly urge you to reconsider this destructive road.
1. It will have detrimental impacts on the Appalachian Trail and the Benton MacKaye Trail.
2. Its cost is amazingly high {$378 million or $38 million per mile), and no way will it pay off; that's $42,000 per Graham County citizen to destroy their mountains. In a time of fiscal problems, building such an expensive road does not seem wise.
3. The proposed road corridor would be destructive to the region's valuable natural and historic assets which generate millions of dollars in recreational revenue annually.
4. The construction in geologically unstable formations will most likely cause ongoing water quality and landslide issues.
Instead of Corridor K, improvements to existing roads would make much more sense.
Thank you
William H. Skelton
